Love it when a cover is better than the original.
I actually bought this album .

I’ve always loved this song and actually heard this before I heard MJ’s original. I think the Alien Ant Farm version truly is a different song because I like both pretty equally but for entirely different reasons. My favorite thing to do though is just listen to the original on Youtube except change it to 1.25x speed. As a music video, the MJ version is way more interesting just because of the choreography. Musically though, i am more of a metal fan so the AAF version is easier to fit with everything else I listen to.

I dont think I have ever heard any other Alien Ant Farm songs. I just know them as the “Smooth Criminal cover band”. Funny how that works out for some bands.

Slow down the original and it sounds dead on Creed.

I honestly don’t remember if any of the other songs were decent, but back then, before iTunes and MP3s, I never bought singles. Always paid a few bucks more for the whole album on CD (from Hastings! ) - and generally I liked more than just the one song I knew I liked.

This is one of those groups that both did and didn’t deserve to get lost in the clutter of the 90's.
Their covers were just amazingly good. But their own stuff was... inconsistent. And their stage presence was... just see for yourself :
Amazingly, they’re still active and touring.

Ahh, buying music, that lol. Most of my music has been acquired from the public library actually. Borrow some CD’s, rip them to flac, and keep on a hard drive. Then I convert to .OGG for mobile usage on my phone. Probably like a good 50% of my music was obtained that way. Another good 25% of it is just borrowing friend’s hard drives and copying the whole thing over, no idea where they got the stuff from. And then the last 25% is from “other” sources haha. Have never bought any digital music, only CDs were ever purchased.

This must be one of those “This song won’t get out of my head, so I’m going to torture you with this, as well.” Two can play at that game.

ANThology comes up in my rotation every so often; still sounds as good as it did way back when. I still love the video for Movies :

I laughed my ass off the first time I saw that video
with all the Micheal Jackson references, but lost it completely when the Pacer’s windows blew out.

Always bothered me on principal
that they were a one hit wonder who didnt actually write their hit.

What is the “album” you speak of? It is like an mp3 player without only one song on it?

I prefer this version to the original because MJ was a child rapist. Incredible artistry aside, I can’t listen to him for that alone.

I thought I remember hearing that AAF didn’t look up the lyrics for Smooth Criminal and just sung what they thought they heard. I don’t know if that’s true, but I like the story.

I saw AAF in concert once, they opened for OAR (who played a two song, 45 minute set because of course they did) and 311. Inexplicably, AAF did not play Smooth Criminal. I wasn’t pleased, but 311 was awesome and that’s what I was there for anyway.

Haha that would make sense considering there are DEFINITELY words that do not match up but sound kind of similar.

That video couldn’t be more early 2000's if it tried. I love it.

Haha - yes, just like an mp3 player, but made of flat plastic with 1-20 songs on it that you have to carefully insert into a contraption that spins it rapidly and in which a laser will read the digital data off of it, transfer it to an electric signal and send it down metal wires that are then converted to vibrations by magnets.
Luckily I’m young enough to have only owned a couple cassette tapes before moving on to CDs...
Also, just so you know, you’re old now, too. No kid today has any concept of what an mp3 player is.

I actually stil l buy CDs... Usually off Amazon so I get the digital version, as well . Just something about having that high quality hard copy...

I did do the BMG Music Club thing for a while - got lots of CDs that way. But I also got sooo much of my early collection from a buddy who was a Napster fiend... ha!

100% agree, if I want to get new music nowadays its only ever CDs. Some bands sell FLAC which is a direct equivalent but those are rare. But its been a long time since I have added anything new to my collection anyways. I have something like 400GB of music on my hard drive and compressed down to about 9oGB to use on my phone’s 128GB card.

I found a treasure trove at my local library... for you young’s our there, a library is a building full of books and various audio and video media.... oh yeah, a “book” is a... you know what, Nevermind. I’m going to go outside and yell at some clouds...
but the library has a great collection of CDs.

I don’t have that much, but I’ve got a lot. I really need to go through and add some recent stuff I’ve bought and cull some stuff I never listen to (at least from my phone). Too much of a packrat to ever permanently delete anything...

Yeah. I know I’m old. I still remember using an actual record player years ago when I was really little . It was outdated at that point and I’m not sure why my family still had it b ut we played the hell out of some Christmas records.
I still remember using cd-tape adapters. Having 10 sec anti-skip! The good old days.

Love listening to OAR (despite that dick move) and 311.

It really sucks... I grew up with the Huxtables, and now we learn that Cosby drugged and raped all these women... Sometimes you just have to separate the art from the artist, but it’s very hard sometimes.

I mean, I’m guessing a pretty large percentage of one hit wonders probably didn’t write their own stuff. But yeah, it’s a lot of fame for one (legitimately awesome) cover.
![]() 10/30/2018 at 12:02 |

I do think it’s possible to separate art and artist- however, it’s different when consuming their art (listening to MJ on Spotify, for instance, watching Cosby’s shows
) actively enriches their estate. For me at least, that’s where the line is drawn, if consuming the art separate from the artist benefits the artist.

Yup. I suppose that in these instances, obtaining them illegally is completely on the moral high ground.

OAR was really good, they’re kind of a jam band so their two song set makes sense. Plus it was their two biggest hits, Hey Girl and That Was a Crazy Game of Poker, so I couldn’t complain.

I read that wrong... didn’t catch the 45 minute part correctly - ha!
